Ashley Wheeler Miss Vermont Goes Green to Miss America

Ashley Wheeler, Miss Vermont 2009, Goes Green to Miss America

Here she comes, Miss Eco-America. If Miss Vermont Ashley Wheeler is crowned Miss America at Planet Hollywood in Vegas this Saturday (airing nationwide on TLC), she’ll take the stage a hand-beaded eco-evening gown made from sustainable silk, vintage gold lace and hemp, which, despite being one of the most sustainable sources for materials on the planet and a favorite crop of our founding fathers, is still a felony to grow in this country.
Tara Lynn specializes on one-of-a-kind natural fiber evening and wedding gowns, embellished with appliqués, vintage trim and hand-embroidery. All of her gowns are made from natural or recycled fibers, and are hand-sewn on vintage sewing machines in Vermont, where she designs from a completely solar-powered studio. And five percent of sales go to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

If a walk down the catwalk or aisle isn’t in your near future, check out the collection of eco-couture jackets that Lynn designs under her alter-ego Earth Bitch label. Doubtful Miss Wheeler will list that label in her contest fashion credits, but one can always hope.
